Today’s message is about a lesson I’m still learning. After a week of neglecting my self-care routines, I find myself unable to show up in my world in the way I want.
I have work to do, and I can’t seem to complete a sentence. I want to connect to my family, but I find myself snapping at them instead. I know my body needs exercise, yet I can’t seem to find the time or energy to do it. I’m distracted easily, and I’m catching myself on social media more than usual. Once again, I’m learning why it’s not ok to put myself last.
Here are the things that I know are essential to my well-being: meditation and journaling, eating well, exercise, drinking plenty of water, 7+ hours of sleep each night, connection time with my husband and my kids.
When I get these in on a regular basis, I can show up for my life in a way that feels good to me. I have enough energy to get things done. I’m emotionally grounded so I can deal with whatever comes my way. I’m able to be present with my loved ones.
Putting our needs last ultimately doesn’t serve anyone. Our husbands want us to be happy. Our kids need us to take care of ourselves. We are the emotional regulators for our whole family and when we're happy, it radiates out and affects everyone. We deserve to live with energy, vitality and excitement. We can’t do that when we’re barely surviving the day!
So, back to the drawing board for me. Lesson learned – again.
